The Conant Trail in Stow forms an elongated circuit over two 1,200-foot-plus mountains in the border country of western Maine. Like its neighbors, Big and Little Deer Mountains (see Hike 24), the Conant Trail lies at the south end of Evans Notch off a Maine road that meanders in and out of New Hampshire. At the most easterly point on the Conant Trail, there are some unique geological resources and striking views of beautiful Horseshoe Pond. This ramble through the unspoiled backcountry of the Cold River region makes a perfect day hike of moderate length.
The Conant Trail can be approached from east or west. From the west, drive south from Gilead or north from Fryeburg on ME 113. Turn east on a gravel road at a bridge over Chandler Brook. This bridge is 13.5 miles south of Gilead. Alternatively, it’s 1.75 miles north of the junction of the north end of Chatham Loop Road and ME 113; or 0.5 mile south of the AMC Cold River Camp. The trailhead is 1.5 miles east of the point where you leave ME 113 in Stow.
From the east, you can approach the trailhead by taking gravel Deer Hill Road west from near the former inn buildings at Evergreen Valley in North Lovell, Maine, just off ME 5. The Conant trailhead is 4.8 miles west of the point where you hit the gravel road beyond the former Evergreen Valley resort area.
Coming from either direction, turn south at a big white pine with a small Chatham Trails Association (CTA) sign and drive in 50 yards from Deer Hill Road. Where another woods road comes in from your right, park out of the way on the grassy shoulder.
